Originally opening in May 1937, the zoo is also set around an 11th century castle and limestone caverns. The large collection of animals includes many endangered species, so much of the animal collection is linked to international conservation and breeding programmes. Some of the endangered species you may see include Bornean orangutans, Rothschild giraffes, Madagascan lemurs and Humboldt penguins.
